Women to Watch: Anya

ANYA RANGANATHAN, BAD APPLE PRODUCE

Dear Fearless Females,

On this “Women to Watch Wednesday,” I’m pleased to introduce you to quite a “good apple,” Anya Ranganathan.

Anya is the co-founder of Bad Apple Produce, a produce delivery service with a mission to reduce food waste and hunger in the NYC metro area. Bad Apple sources food at risk of going to waste for no good reason from farmers, wholesalers, and food producers within 150 miles of New York City, and delivers them to customer’s doorsteps at up to a 50% discount to retail.

Bad Apple might source products due to minor cosmetic imperfections, a misprint on the packaging, or excess supply. Since its launch in June 2019, the company has rescued over 250,000 lbs. of food from going to waste!

Anya co-founded her first company at 19 and began her professional career in commodities sales and trading at a multinational investment bank. After graduating from college and moving to New York City, she was floored by how difficult she found grocery shopping: every trip to the store involved doing calculations to budget out how much she needed versus what she could physically haul down the block and up to her fifth floor walkup. Frustrated by the lack of options that fit her budget, she partnered with Stefanie Katzman, a fourth generation produce industry veteran, to build a solution for the city they both call home.

Thank you for joining me on yet another Wednesday celebrating women who are certainly worth watching! I hope you are enjoying this weekly series as much as I am. I have no doubt that we rise by lifting others.

Fondly,
Yansi
