HERStory: Brittany

LOVER OF FLOWERS, EVENT EXECUTIVE, FRANCHISE OWNER, LEGACY MAKER

Occupation: "Front desk coordinator and Event Exec.”

Tell me a little about your business:

"My business is called Alice’s Table. Sort of a small franchise, I wanted to contribute to the developing social and art scenes here in Greensboro. Alice’s Table takes the D.I.Y off of your Pinterest board and delivers it to women looking to be creative and social. I teach floral arranging workshops at various locations for public events, in addition to private events such as birthday parties and wedding showers or bridal parties. I am excited to educate my guests on floral knowledge and best practices while bring them together for a great time even if it’s just for a brief workshop. I also work full time at a local upscale hair salon as their front desk coordinator."

What is your business/work or personal philosophy?

"'No legacy is so rich as honesty’- William Shakespeare
Innately at the service of my creator by perpetuating honest and intentional work is how I define my purpose and passion. I stand as a proud Sociology nerd and live inspired by the collective and creative consciousness of social theory. Humans are the only species that are able to fully creatively and consciously produce. Animals such as bees and beavers demonstrate a sort of similar binary form of creative and conscious production however, they only create to adapt, survive and thrive in their environments. Humans however create often times for the sole of creating without actually fulfilling a need. It is at the intersection of unique production that meets an intentional need while establishing a legacy where I find myself in abundance. There is nothing more honorable than creating something that solves a problem, making something operate more efficiently or curate better opportunities for my community. If I can leave someone in a better position than when I found them, I feel fulfilled. I chase that feeling on a daily by being as intentional as I can be."

What makes you feel like a powerful woman?

"I consider the human body to be the most fascinating phenomenon of all time. I feel most powerful in the gym honestly. The discipline necessary to physically challenge your body is an incredible trait that translates to a multitude of things in life. I like to lift alone and the moment I feel the weight in my hands, there is a spark inside that reminds me I am human, I am comprised of a bajillion cells that depend on me not to be sedentary but to be functional. In a close second place, I honestly feel the bad-assiest in a good suit! A suit is a form of armor or a uniform that represents my labor and intention; I’m here to do some damn good work, in this damn good suit! Okurr!"

Fill in the blank: I want my clothes to make me feel _______________.

"When I make an effort to put together my look, I want to be comfortable and confident. I want my clothes to comfort me in how I choose to represent and express myself. "

Who are your top three badass female role models?

"Notoriously my mother is my favorite and always principle badass! Her courageousness, tenacity and passion are truly admirable. My mother moved to this country in her early twenties, not knowing the language and with a small child she was able to manifest a legacy that is incomparable. My mother’s entire family still resides in Puerto Rico whereas she has been in the United States for 35 years. I applaud my mother for her display of strength and love.

Rita Moreno, another one of my Top five Boricuas! Of 13 total artists, Rita Moreno is the only Latina and one of the earliest artists to earn an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award. With such distinction in lieu of her Hollywood career, she also served as a civil rights activist along side Harry Belafonte in the early 1960s. An all around sensational performer and humanitarian, it is no doubt Rita Moreno is essentially my spirit animal. WEPA!

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a divine intervention. Appointed by President Clinton in 1993, a crusader of her own vendetta against the ridiculous gender and racial inequality in the US by challenging the United States justice system arguing six landmark cases before the Supreme Court. Justice Ginsburg is the epitome of being every woman, remarkably exuding grace and power from such a petite being. "
